As the holiday season quickly approaches, holiday stressors tend to sneak up as well. These additional commitments for time and money can zap the happy from the holidays, says Dr. David Brown, a human sciences specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. To make the holidays a little lighter, Greene County Extension is offering “Having a Stress-free Holiday” on Monday, Dec. 4.
This is the December event for the new series, Greene Living. Brown will offer practical tips to minimize stress and increase joy during the holidays. Peggy Moranville, licensed massage therapist, will provide 2-minute chair massages to those attending. Snacks will be provided and a drawing will be held for “Relax Basket.” The event is from 6 to 7:30 pm at the Greene County Extension office in Jefferson. Cost is $15 per person before Nov. 30, and $20 after.
“With already hectic schedules, many of us add holiday shopping, baking, wrapping and decorating to our list of things to do,” said Brown, who specializes in family life issues and is a licensed marital and family therapist. “We may have office, family or neighborhood parties to go to; house guests to get ready for; or travel plans to make. There may be programs for our children or in our faith communities that we want to attend,” Brown said. “Not only are all of the additional commitments and running challenging, but this is the season when the financial expectations can increase to significantly stressful levels too.”
